Why are some families happy, but others seem to be empty or full of sorrow? Here are the ten secrets of happy families.
1. Prayer. We cannot know God’s blessings without being rooted in prayer.
2. Communication. Families need to communicate their joys, sorrows, dreams and ideas. This sharing builds love and trust.
3. Love. True love is unconditional; it has no “strings attached.” We love because Jesus commands us to do so. Happy is the family that loves others!
4. Discipline. Discipline means training according to standards. Our standard bearer is Jesus. When we willingly turn our lives over to Him, we become disciplined followers.
5. Empathy. Compassion for others is a trait of caring families. It is not enough to share another’s burden; we must act by giving our help and love.
6. Modeling. Children learn by what they see and hear. Parents who model good examples bring their children wisdom. Above all, we must be genuine.
7. Anger Control. When anyone displays uncontrolled anger, the family suffers. Read the Word and pray. Get help if necessary. Restore harmony before the day ends, or tomorrow the burden will be greater.
8. Worship. Children need more than their parents to hang their anchor on. It is good to take youth to games, events and music lessons. But don’t forfeit worship of our wonderful Savior.
9. Peace. Resolve to maintain peace in the home and family.
10. Fellowship. Families need to be hospitable and to play together. These are all the secrets!
